A tragic workplace accident with fatal consequences occurred on Friday morning while felling timber in the Rappenloch gorge in Dornbirn. A 53-year-old man fell victim to a series of extremely unfortunate circumstances.
Together with two other men (76 and 44 years old), the 53-year-old was felling two trees in the “Unter der Alp” area, one of which was rotten. To prevent the rotten tree from falling onto an underlying road, it was attached to a supposedly healthy tree using a steel cable deflection.
The 76-year-old then sawed the tree correctly, after which the 53-year-old pulled the steel cable with a tractor winch. Then the accident happened: the supposedly strong trunk to which the deflection was attached broke off and fell towards the 53-year-old.
According to a witness (44), he tried to get out of the way, but was hit in the head with full force by the branches. The other two loggers immediately came to the aid of the seriously injured man and resuscitated him. The accident victim was then flown to Feldkirch State Hospital by the Christophorus 8 rescue helicopter. A little later came the sad news that the man had died.
