265,000 euros in damage – IT specialist emptied the boss’s Bitcoin account

Date:

He played the good employee who was happy to help. But in reality, a 32-year-old from Linz would have played a bad game with his boss. The IT expert first helped the director buy Bitcoins, but over time the employee emptied the account and financed his life.

In July 2023, the director of a company from the Urfahr-Raum district reported serious cryptocurrency fraud. De Anzeiger stated that he had given a total of eight transfers totaling 265,000 euros to his 32-year-old advisor from Linz to invest in Bitcoins. The 32-year-old initially supported the director with the investment by purchasing the Bitcoins for the director through a Bitcoin exchanger.

Hardware stored in the company
He also helped him set up a so-called hardware wallet. The entire invested amount was transferred to this hardware wallet. The hardware wallet was ultimately stored on the premises of the injured company. The 32-year-old from Linz enjoyed the full confidence of the later injured party. He also worked as an IT specialist for the damaged company and was therefore in the company’s offices several times. He also had access to the hardware wallet located there.

Funds a lavish lifestyle
In the period from February 2023 to July 2023, unexplained transfers of the Bitcoins stored on the hardware wallet took place. The entire amount was taken from the victim’s wallet in multiple transactions. The Bitcoin consultant may have exchanged the hardware wallet for another identical model while in the damaged company’s office. He eventually sold the Bitcoins and had the amounts deposited into his account to finance his extravagant lifestyle.

After a long time, distrust grew
At that time, the company’s president was not yet suspicious of his Bitcoin advisor. The man from Linz pretended to the director that he would help him find the missing Bitcoins. The 32-year-old from Linz tried to explain to the director that his hardware wallet had been hacked and that the Bitcoins had been withdrawn. Only after further suspicious actions did the manager become suspicious and report the matter to the police.

Child pornography has been found
Based on extensive investigations by the Hellmonsödt police station together with cybercrime investigators from the Urfahr-Raum district, it was proven that the 32-year-old from Linz had stolen all Bitcoins stored on the hardware wallet. A search took place at the suspect’s home address. All IT devices were seized and then evaluated by the district’s forensic IT expert. This review allowed further evidence to be secured. In addition, suspicious files containing child pornography content were found on several devices seized from 32-year-old Linzer.
