Explosives found underground in Gaza Strip: Israeli soldiers and domestic intelligence say they have discovered a tunnel belonging to the terrorist organization Hamas under UNRWA headquarters. The aid organization claims to have known nothing about it.
The underground passage would be 700 meters long and 18 meters deep. According to the army, this is an important military intelligence facility for Hamas.

It is unclear whether Hamas used it before the war started
The military also claims to have found large quantities of weapons and explosives in the past two weeks at the UN agency’s headquarters – which was abandoned by UNRWA in the early stages of the war. There is evidence that offices and buildings in UNRWA headquarters were used by Hamas terrorists. There was no information about when exactly this custom took place, either before or after the start of the war. The information could not initially be independently verified.
UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said the agency was not aware of reports of the discovery of the tunnel under his organization’s headquarters in Gaza. The UNRWA staff had already evacuated the headquarters on October 12 on the orders of the Israeli army, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday evening. The organization has not used it since.
UNRWA denies connection to the tunnel
In the past, whenever a suspicious cavity was found near or beneath UNRWA premises, letters of protest were immediately sent to the parties to the conflict, Lazzarini wrote – including both Hamas and Israeli authorities. This was also reflected in the annual reports presented and published to the general meeting.
UNRWA is a humanitarian organization and has “neither the military and security expertise nor the capacity to militarily inspect what is or may be under its facilities,” he added. At the same time, Israeli authorities have not officially informed UNRWA about the alleged tunnel.
Israel’s Foreign Minister calls for the resignation of the head of UNRWA
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz immediately dismissed Lazzarini’s story as “absurd” and called for the immediate replacement of the head of UNRWA. “His immediate resignation is essential,” Katz wrote on X.
The aid organization has recently come under heavy criticism. There have been repeated accusations from Israel that it is working with Hamas. Specifically, some employees were accused of involvement in the terrorist acts carried out by the Islamist Hamas in Israel on October 7. Several Western countries have temporarily halted payments to UNRWA over the allegations, including Austria and the two largest donors, the US and Germany. UN Secretary General António Guterres promised comprehensive information. The collaboration with a number of employees has ended.
The Gaza War was sparked by the unprecedented massacre wrought on October 7 by terrorists from Hamas and other extremist Palestinian organizations in Israel, near the border with the Gaza Strip.
