Thousands of families flee southern and eastern Lebanon due to Israeli bombardments

The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has warned that Israeli bombardments, which have hit thousands of civilians and forced their displacement, “not only violate international law but may also constitute war crimes.”

The Lebanese government has confirmed that “thousands” of families have been forced to flee the southern and eastern regions of the country because they bombed by Israelin a campaign of unprecedented attacks in a year of violence.

“As a result of these attacks, thousands of families have been displaced from the targeted areas,” Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad said, without giving specific figures on how many people or areas had been affected by the attacks.

There are also departures from the southern suburbs of Beirut, known as Dahyea stronghold of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, which was targeted again in a bombing on Monday, just three days after another 50 people were killed.

According to the National News Agency (ANN), the entrance to the southern city Sidonon the country’s main coastal road, is experiencing heavy traffic jams due to the large number of vehicles leaving the southernmost areas.

The Lebanese Ministry of Interior had already confirmed a “mass displacement from the southern regions,” while announcing the opening of a series of schools that had been pre-established as reception centers in case this eventuality arose.

Amid the wave of displacement, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuhas asked Lebanon’s citizens in a video message to stay out of the “danger zone” and evacuate the eastern and southern areas of the country that Israel is bombarding.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (FINUL) has warned that the Israeli bombings, which have hit thousands of civilians and forced their displacement, “are not only violations of international law but may also constitute war crimes.”

“Any further escalation of this dangerous situation could have devastating and far-reaching consequences not only for those living on both sides of the Blue Line (the dividing line between Lebanon and Israel), but also for the region as a whole,” he added in a statement.
