Entrepreneurship means all new activity initiatives that are in no case older than four years. Are the new additions to economic activityand its impact on society is measured as the Entrepreneurial activity rate.
That meter, the Entrepreneurial Activity Rate, amounts to a 8.9% the business details of the EU-27far below the United States (19.2%) or the United Kingdom (12.9%).
Spain has since fallen further behind, with an entrepreneurship rate of 6% Euskadi and Navarre with a rate of 5.2%, in values lower than the state average. The truth is that the different autonomous communities show a fairly homogeneous behavior on this point. Catalonia (6.9%) and Madrid and Valencia (6.8%) have the best rate, and La Rioja (4.2%) the worst.
Entrepreneurship, to earn a living
According to the EITB data, the main reason to start is to generate an employment alternative, or earn a living in light of the job shortage. This is how 7 in 10 citizens of the Basque Country and 6 in 10 Navarres responded to the question.
At Euskadi, the weight of the option is also striking “continues a family tradition”which reaches 29.5% of responses, compared to 15% in Navarre.
When we look at the projects, eight in ten come from the service sector in Euskadi, mainly non-knowledge intensive services.
On the other hand, when asked what is the main obstacle to starting a business, almost six in ten people acknowledge that “fear of failure” It’s the main brake.
The profile of the entrepreneur
In Euskadi the average age of the entrepreneur is between 43 years, and in Navarre at 42, a figure above the rest of the countries. For example, in the United States the average entrepreneur is 36 years old, in Germany and the Netherlands it is 37 years old, and the average in the European Union is 38 years old.
And Euskadi and Navarra are two of the regions with the highest percentage of entrepreneurs in the age group between 55 and 64 years (16%). Only two in ten Entrepreneurs are on the edge 18-34 years in Euskadi, and three out of ten in Navarre.
In this sense, in the United States, the Netherlands or Germany, half of entrepreneurs are younger than 35 years old.
