Sabotage suspected: explosions on several gas pipelines in Iran

Date:

Explosions took place on several Iranian gas pipelines on Wednesday night. The government in Tehran suspects sabotage and has convened an emergency meeting.

The explosions took place inland and in the south, state media reported. According to officials, initial evidence of sabotage has already been found.

The head of the Center for the National Gas Pipeline Network, Said Aghli, described the incidents as a terrorist attack in an interview with state television. The explosions took place around 1am. That evening, Oil Minister Javad Oji convened an emergency meeting with the security services.

Repeated attacks on Iranian infrastructure
There are currently no further details about the background and cause of the explosions. The Islamic Republic has been repeatedly targeted by acts of sabotage. Only in December did hackers attack the national payment system at gas stations. Iran’s nuclear program has also been the target of sabotage in the past.
