Rabbit plague in Paris: 300 animals moved

Date:

Nearly fifty wild rabbits have been captured in recent days near the Invalides Cathedral, where they harass gardeners with their tunnels. A total of 300 will be moved to the area around Bréau Castle, east of the French capital. They are not allowed to be hunted there.

“They will be vaccinated and released,” a spokesperson for the Paris prefecture said Tuesday evening. Six more catching dates are planned until the end of February, with a maximum of twelve rabbit catchers in action each time.

Animals pose a health risk
It is said that there are 300 rabbits roaming around the Invalides Cathedral, which poses a health hazard because dead animals attract rats. They also cause damage to the gardens and the sewage system, the cost of which so far amounts to approximately 370,000 euros.

However, an animal protection organization accused the prefecture of mistreating the animals because capturing them caused stress for the animals.

Some of them would die during the process and during transport, the Paris Animaux Zoopolis association criticized. Still, the animals have to leave.
