More than a day after the landslide at a Turkish gold mine, none of the nine buried people have yet been found. The people were buried in cars or containers, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Wednesday. Metal detectors are used during the search.
As reported, a landslide occurred on Tuesday at the gold mining site in Erzincan, eastern Turkey (see video above). The reasons are not yet known. Photos showed a huge amount of earth falling from a slope into a valley.
Toxic cyanides
Several organizations are now facing an environmental disaster due to the toxic cyanide that could leak into the nearby Euphrates River. However, government representatives initially denied this. The operating company Anagold also stated that the landslide did not cause environmental pollution.
Cyanide would be used to dissolve gold from the rocks. They are very poisonous, says Michael Tost, professor at the Montan University of Leoben. The landslide could have been caused by heavy rain or an earthquake. According to Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc, four people have been arrested so far in connection with the disaster.
