Global spread – new alert level: Italy fears dengue

Date:

Following the dengue crisis in Brazil and the global rise in fever, Italy has decided to raise the alert level at ports and airports. Transport companies operating in the affected countries should be monitored particularly closely.

The directive was issued by the Ministry of Health after the World Health Organization recently said that a surprising increase in dengue infections worldwide poses a potentially major threat to public health and Brazil is facing a serious dengue crisis.

Infection must be reported
According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety, 30 to 120 dengue virus infections are diagnosed in Austria every year, so far only in travelers returning from endemic areas. Dengue infections are among the notifiable diseases in Austria.

A new two-part vaccination has recently been approved in this country, which, according to researchers, shows good effectiveness. The current Austrian vaccination plan does not currently provide general vaccination advice for travelers to dengue endemic areas.

With approximately 390 million infections and up to 50,000 deaths worldwide annually, dengue is a very widespread tropical disease in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Deadly tropical disease
Fever is a gel-borne disease that occurs in tropical and subtropical regions. Mild dengue causes high fever and flu-like symptoms. The severe form, also called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause severe bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and death.
