Gazprom cuts gas supply to the Netherlands after refusing to pay in rubles

“Gazprom Export has informed GazTerra of the cessation of gas supplies from May 31, 2021 and until payment is made in accordance with the mechanisms established by the decree” of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which sets the payment in rubles, it said Russian consortium reported on his Telegram account.

Gazprom has recalled that the Dutch company refused to pay for gas supplies in rubles, in accordance with Putin’s decree and Russia’s proposed mechanism to counter Western sanctions against Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.

Formerly countries like Poland, Bulgaria and Finland they refused to pay for the gas in rubles, after which Moscow fulfilled its threat and cut off supplies to these countries.

According to Moscow, about half of the foreign importers in the gas in Russian they have already opened accounts with Gazprombank to pay for the Kremlin’s proposed scheme, which provides for the conversion of foreign currencies into rubles.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexandr Novak defended that this measure aims to “guarantee the importation of foreign currency, its conversion into rubles and payment in rubles of the gas supplied”.

According to the official Russian agency TASS, more than 20 companies have already opened accounts with Gazprombank, in accordance with Kremlin demands, including Italian energy company Eni, Germany’s Uniper consortium and France’s Engie.
