During World War II, the Canadian freighter SS Arlington sank during a storm in the icy waters of Lake Superior. The crew survived – only the captain voluntarily went down with the ship. Now the wreck was discovered with the help of a pensioner at a depth of about 180 meters. But some mysteries will always remain hidden despite the sensational discovery, according to the discoverers…
The approximately 74 meter long ship, loaded with wheat, sank on May 1, 1940 after dense fog turned into a storm. Captain Frederick Burke nevertheless ordered the ship to steer towards the open sea. Water leaked into the boat in the middle of the night. The crew had to climb into lifeboats in the freezing cold and were picked up by another large freighter. The SS Arlington, on the other hand, disappeared into the dark water and only now surfaced after a research mission.
Amateur researcher discovered anomaly in the lake
Retired electronics engineer and amateur shipwreck researcher Dan Fountain had discovered a deep anomaly in the lake and was unable to investigate it himself with his small boat and weak sonar equipment. The organization Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) helped him — and ultimately made the sensational discovery during a 2023 expedition — discover what “looked very much like a shipwreck,” Fountain said. A remote-controlled vehicle with cameras was then sent down and discovered it was the SS Arlington.
In this post you can see the SS Arlington still above the water:
But a mystery remains, namely what prompted the captain to remain on the sinking freighter. ‘Why did he go down with his ship… when he could have easily been saved like the rest of his crew? The fact is, no one will ever know the answer,” LSHS said in a news release Monday.
