Since Israel’s right-wing religious coalition government came to power under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, settler activity in the West Bank has increased dramatically. According to the non-governmental organization Peace Now, more illegal settlements were established on Palestinian territory last year than ever before.
According to the organization, about ten of the 26 settlements have been built since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7. The report links the increase in the number of illegal settlements to the arrival of the ultra-right government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in December 2022. This includes right-wing extremist politicians who support the settlers and live in settlements themselves.
Since the government came to power, Israeli authorities have allowed settlers to “set up outposts unhindered.” Under the Netanyahu government, “we have seen unprecedented support for settlements,” Peace Now continued. The previously maximum number of such new outposts, which are usually subsequently legalized by the authorities, was reached in 2002 with 23.
Sanctions against ‘extremist’ settlers
In the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967, about three million Palestinians and about 490,000 Israelis live in settlements classified by the UN as violating international law. France imposed sanctions on 28 “extremist” Israeli settlers on Tuesday. Britain and the US had previously imposed sanctions on several colonists.
