Donations from Austria – “Neighbor in Need”: “More money needed for Ukraine”

Date:

There has been war in Ukraine for two years and the situation on the ground remains catastrophic. The Ukrainian aid from “Neighbor in Need” continues two years after the start of the war and is still dependent on donations from Austria. Pius Strobl, the ORF director of ‘Neighbor in Need’ makes it clear: ‘We still need money.’

February 24 marked exactly two years since Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine began – and continues today. And the people of Ukraine have been living in a state of emergency for almost two years. Entire cities are in ruins, family members are dead, injured or on the run. A generation is growing up in war, accompanied by fear and uncertainty.

More than 101 million euros have been made available so far, 59.4 million from the population and almost 42 million from the foreign disaster fund, Neighbors in Need board member Michael Opriesnig reported on Wednesday. The number of donations decreased over time. “We will continue to need support,” he appealed

“Ukraine fatigue”
He had already noted a “Ukrainian fatigue” last year and “that the war no longer plays a role in our attention,” said Opriesnig, secretary general of the Austrian Red Cross. “For the people there, every day is about survival,” he said at a press conference in Vienna.

“Neighbor in need is also a term in Ukraine,” said Ukrainian Ambassador to Vienna Wassyl Chymynets, who was in the audience at the press conference. That shows that help is coming, he assured.

But the psychological burden remains high; In total, 17.6 million people, almost half of the population, are dependent on humanitarian aid, and approximately ten million people suffer from acute stress or mental illness. What everyone agrees on is that there is still incredible resilience among the Ukrainian population.
