ID Austria expands – new feature for drivers: registration on mobile phones

Date:

With the digital registration certificate, the next official document that drivers can also carry on their mobile phone is the driver’s license, which has been available since the end of 2022. 560,000 driving licenses have already been activated by the population, so they have reached the citizens, said State Secretary for Digitalization Florian Tursky (ÖVP) when presenting the next ID Austria feature.

For Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), the digital vehicle registration certificate is not only important for the population, but also a “further step for modern police work”, which will set an international standard for one of the “most modern police organizations in the world”. of Europe,” it read in the Rossauer barracks in Vienna. One condition was the modernized equipment of the executive branch, Karner emphasized, noting that since 2017, every police officer has been equipped with a smartphone.

State Secretary Tursky (ÖVP) for digitalization set the goal of transferring all identity cards from the wallet to the smartphone. Now that the registration certificate can also be sent this way, every traffic control can be carried out digitally. The prerequisite is simply the updated full version of ID-Austria – the successor to the mobile phone signature – including biometric security features and a vehicle registered in Austria. Of course, multiple vehicles can also be stored; During the traffic control, only a QR code needs to be generated, which the officer then checks.

Identity cards and e-cards should follow
With the ID card, Tursky announced the following digitalization steps for 2024; a Digi-E-Card is another project that is being worked on together with the Ministry of Social Affairs. Work on the registration certificate is still continuing, as the digital version cannot yet be passed on if, for example, a vehicle is borrowed – the paper version remains the only option for the time being. But this must change quickly, because later in the year it must also be possible to pass on commercial vehicles with a permit. And anyone worried they’ll have trouble generating the QR code when checking a vehicle in a location with poor network coverage can rest assured: Internet access isn’t necessary, Tursky says.

By amending the eIDAS regulation with the EU Digital Wallet, vehicle documents should also be valid in other EU countries, Tursky says. He emphasized that Austria is currently the only European country that works with this standard. “All EU countries must follow this example by the end of 2025. We are already talking bilaterally with neighboring countries about recognition.

The Ministry of the Interior is taking further digital steps. Karner announced that the next generation of smartphones will be delivered to the executive branch next year. About 32,000 devices will enable special search and ZMR queries, and there will be another 3,000 tablets for patrol purposes. “The new devices enable mobile case processing, so that officers can process the file in question immediately.” The pilot phase has started and full implementation will take place at the end of this year. Thanks to mobile capabilities, agents can do their work without having to go to the office. At the same time, citizen-oriented and service work must be made possible.
