The birds bred at Rosegg Zoo were shot by unknown people in Italy. The Carinthian project seems plagued by bad luck.
The northern bald ibis project at Rosegg has suffered another serious setback. A bird from the zoo’s breeding colony was found with a seriously injured wing on a road in the municipality of Buja (province of Friuli-Venezia Giulia). Several projectiles were discovered in Freckles’ body at the reception center in Udine. The bird died during the emergency operation. After his death, another projectile was discovered that may have been lodged in his flight muscle for some time. So Freckles had apparently been shot twice within days.
