In terms of population – Salzburg ahead of Carinthia: sixth place is now official

Date:

Since the beginning of the year, there are officially more people from Salzburg than from Carinthia. Decades of development made up for the large gap. The ‘problem child’ Lungau is growing again.

The changing of the guard was announced years ago. It’s been pretty much official since the beginning of the year, and this week the statistical authority “Statistik Austria” made it official. Salzburg is now the sixth largest state in terms of population, leaving Carinthia behind. A year ago there were more than 600 more Carinthians than residents of Salzburg. There are now almost 1,700 more people from Salzburg than from Carinthia.

The reason for this lies mainly in the weak population growth of Salzburg’s southern neighbor. While population growth in this country was exactly the Austrian average of 0.6 percent, the increase in Carinthia was only 0.1 percent. This development has been going on for decades.

Salzburg is growing faster than Carinthia, almost since measurements began in the 19th century. In the 1970s, Carinthia still had more than 100,000 inhabitants. Interesting: with ten districts, the southernmost state not only has four more districts than Salzburg, but is also almost 2,400 square kilometers larger with almost 10,000 square kilometers. The latest figures from Statistics Austria also show interesting developments within Salzburg.

Flachgau remains the district with the most inhabitants
The Lungau – long the ‘problem child’ of Salzburg in terms of population – is growing again. With just under 20,500 inhabitants, it had more residents at the beginning of this year than since 2016. And Flachgau, which overtook the city as the most populous district in 2022, continues to grow rapidly and will likely remain Salzburg’s most populous district for longer.

According to the latest figures from the city statisticians, who have direct access to the central population register and do not wait for the data to be cleaned by “Statistik Austria”, the population level in the city is now actually declining.
