About 2,000 participants demonstrated in the center of Dornbirn on Sunday evening to protect democracy. A strong signal from civil society!
About 40 organizations, initiatives and clubs from all walks of life invited people to the rally in Dornbirn under the motto “Never again is now!” “We want to send a strong signal for democracy, human rights and humanity,” co-organizer Peter Mennel of the ‘Platform for Human Rights’ hoped for active participation in advance. Despite the bad weather, this wish came true: About 2,000 people gathered on the Dornbirn market square – a surprising number considering that the demonstration culture in Vorarlberg, as is known, is not particularly developed.
Organizers had stressed several times that the demonstration should not be directed against specific parties or individuals, but rather against “attitudes and dynamics that poison coexistence, endanger democracy and strive to divide society.” And of course it was clear to everyone which mental attitudes were specifically referred to – and these were also clearly identified by the speakers, including the historian Werner Dreier and Hanno Loewy.
An important reason for the demonstration was the concern that right-wing ideas could increasingly infect the middle of society. In Dornbirn ‘the center’ showed that it does have defense mechanisms.
