The President of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyenwill announce his candidacy for a second term at the head of the European Commission this Monday.

The German leader has already announced that she wants to appoint a Defense Commissioner to the European Commission.

A few months before the European elections that will take place from June 6 to 9, the German politician will participate in a meeting of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in which she will explain her intentions.

The press conference of Von der Leyen and CDU leader Friedrich Merz is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (Euskal Herria time).

The Luxembourg politician Nicholas Schmitthe current European Commissioner for Employment, is the candidate of the Party of European Socialists (PES) to preside over the European Commission in the 2024-2029 term and thus Von der Leyen’s opponent on the way to re-election.
