Hundreds of tractors have been blocking the Czech capital Prague since early Monday. The farmers protest against the agricultural policy of the Czech government. They complain about high energy prices, bureaucracy and inadequate subsidy policies and call on the Czech Republic to withdraw from the EU’s Green Deal.
“We are fighting to ensure that the energy industry, the food industry and agricultural production remain in local hands. “Let us not tolerate the destruction of industry and agriculture as a result of the Green Deal!” the protest organizers demanded.
The two trade union federations that organized the blockade expect the protest to last until Monday afternoon. It cannot be ruled out that there may still be traffic disruptions on Tuesday.
“Do you know what a cow looks like?”
Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný criticized the protest organizers, accusing them of working with misinformation and pursuing their own political ambitions. When he tried to talk to the farmers, he was booed. “Traitor!”, “Government resigns!” and “Do you know what a cow looks like?” the demonstrators shouted.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala also condemned the protest. This “has little to do with the struggle for better conditions for farmers”. The protest was “arrested by people who, for example, do not hide their support for the Kremlin,” he wrote.
