Opposition activist Igar Lednik (64) died in prison in Belarus. His former social democratic Belarusian party Gramada announced this on Tuesday. Lednik was jailed in 2022 for “defamation” against President Alexander Lukashenko.
He was a democracy activist and journalist. Lednik was arrested in December 2022 and later sentenced to three years in prison for publishing in a party newspaper. On Tuesday, the former opposition party announced that Lednik had died in custody. The human rights organization Wiasna confirmed the information.
Surgery and heart problems
In prison, the activist’s health had “deteriorated significantly”, according to the Gramada party, which is being kept alive by Belarusians in exile. Accordingly, Lednik had undergone surgery due to a problem with the digestive tract and was also suffering from heart problems. However, the party did not reveal the exact cause of his death or the time of death.
In Belarus, any opposition is massively suppressed. This is because she labeled Lukashenko’s alleged re-election in 2020 as fraud. The Belarusian president is a close ally of Russian leader Vladimir Putin (see video above). According to Wiasna, there are 1,400 political prisoners in prison in Belarus.
