Intel has acquired Microsoft as a high-profile customer for its contract manufacturing business. The software giant will have a new chip built using the semiconductor company’s new manufacturing technology, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at an Intel event.
There were initially no details about the chip or the schematic. Microsoft had previously announced that it would develop a computer processor and a special chip for artificial intelligence applications.
Intel boss Pat Gelsinger wants to strengthen his group as a contract manufacturer for other chip developers and thus mainly compete with the current leading manufacturer TSMC from Taiwan. Gelsinger set the goal of offering Intel customers the most modern manufacturing technology within a few years. To date, Intel has collected orders worth $15 billion as a contract manufacturer.
In addition to factories in the US, Intel is currently planning two factories in Magdeburg, where the most modern chips will be produced. At the event on Wednesday, the company announced the next step in processor production with even higher transistor density.
