Aid for Ukraine – The German Bundestag voted against the delivery of Taurus

Date:

The German Bundestag has rejected the delivery of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. Only 182 MPs voted in favor on Thursday, 480 against. However, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) announced other military support.

Last week he did not comment on whether the Taurus cruise missile is also included. “I cannot answer that. I have read the application. The applicants must have thought about their share (…),” he said in response to a question from CDU MP Jürgen Hardt. In contrast to Chancellor Olaf Scholz Pistorius is a member of the government, but not of the Bundestag.

On Thursday, a CDU/CSU motion calling for Taurus cruise missiles for Ukraine was voted on there. The cruise missile can independently fly hundreds of kilometers to its target and is launched from an aircraft (see video above).

“Ukraine is still not receiving the full amount of material it urgently needs to effectively repel Russia’s war of aggression,” parliamentary group leader Friedrich Merz said. Lately, military experts and politicians have repeatedly called for new and rapid aid to Ukraine, as Russian forces currently have the advantage. However, the motion was rejected by 480 votes in favor and 182 against, while five MPs abstained.

New military aid from Denmark
Meanwhile, the Danish government announced a new aid package for the war-torn country worth 1.7 billion kroner (the equivalent of about 228 million euros). If Ukraine wants to be successful on the battlefield, more aid must be provided, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said. She hopes other countries will follow her example, “not in six or twelve months, but now, when the need is very great.”
