A country before our time – and before political correctness: Researchers now denounce old names for dinosaurs!
Researchers led by paleobiologist Emma Dunne of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg have analyzed 1,500 names of dinosaurs that lived in the Mesozoic era between 251 and 66 million years ago.
89 dinosaur names “offensive”
Their result: 89 dinosaur names are ‘offensive’, i.e. ‘racist’ or ‘sexist’. The research, which will not be officially published until April, uses, for example, the 30-ton ‘Janenschia Robusta’ – named after the German paleontologist Werner Janensch (1878–1969), who led the expedition in Tanzania.
The research leader is bothered by the fact that he and other dinosaurs are not named after African expedition participants. Moreover, 87 percent of names without a neutral name are male. Researchers are now calling for a critical evaluation and future corrections of the naming system. The committee responsible for this has stated that it will not change its name for the time being.
