East Tyrol and the Zillertal Alps are particularly hard hit this weekend by the return of winter to Tyrol. Winter sports enthusiasts are urgently requested to exercise restraint outside the secured slopes.
If the weather forecasts are correct, it will snow throughout Tyrol on Saturday night – sometimes heavily. East Tyrol and the Zillertal Alps will be particularly affected; even the Inn valley can easily turn white.
All exposures affected
The recently very favorable avalanche situation is now a thing of the past. “In East Tyrol and the Zillertal Alps there is a high avalanche danger above the tree line on Friday, level four,” says expert Christoph Mitterer of the Tyrolean Avalanche Warning Service. All exposures are affected. For the other parts of the country there is still a significant avalanche danger above the tree line – level 3. Mitterer sees no threat to traffic routes, level 4 is only relevant for winter sports enthusiasts.
They face a problem of fresh snow: potential dangerous areas would be covered in snow and therefore cannot be identified. There is less snow north of the Inn, but there are still problems with sliding snow in lower areas.
Full threesome Little relaxation is expected for the weekend. Snowfall will stop on Saturday and the weather will improve on Sunday with a light shower. The avalanche danger drops only minimally to – as Mitterer puts it – “no less than three”.
The expert therefore strongly advises winter sports enthusiasts to exercise restraint.
