Forest fires are currently raging in the Australian state of Victoria. The devastating scale of the fires is evident from photos of empty houses surrounded by huge clouds of smoke.
A massive forest fire in the country is still burning out of control. Thousands of people are on the run in the region. At least 11,000 hectares of land have been destroyed so far.
Areas around the city of Ballarat, about 120 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, are particularly affected. Since Thursday, residents of dozens of communities have been urged to seek immediate safety.
About 1,000 firefighters, hundreds of fire trucks and nearly 60 aircraft, including four large tankers, are battling the flames.
Intense heat and strong winds are the cause
The cause of the forest fire is still unclear, but high temperatures and strong winds pushed the fire front forward extremely quickly on Thursday.
