Spectacular traffic accident on the A2 near Graz: On Thursday evening, a Salzburger (68) crashed his car into the back of a Hungarian coach. The car immediately started burning. Police officers who happened to pass by became life savers.
A Hungarian coach was driving on the A2 towards Vienna on Thursday evening when a huge crash suddenly occurred at the Graz-West junction: a driver crashed into the back of the fully occupied bus for reasons that are still unclear.
The car suddenly caught fire
The driver (68) could see the accident in his rear-view mirror. After the collision, the car of the also 68-year-old man from Salzburg was thrown into the middle concrete barrier and then collided with a shock absorber. The accident car immediately started burning in the engine compartment. A brave passenger on the bus immediately rushed to the car with a fire extinguisher and began to fight the flames.
Police pulled the steering wheel from the burning wreckage
He quickly received support: a police patrol from the state traffic department happened to pass by the scene. “We saw the bus on the hard shoulder and then people ran towards us and shouted that a car was on fire!” says district inspector Stefan Strohmaier.
Together with his colleague Anita Blauensteiner, the police officer immediately rushed to help. “I am in the volunteer fire brigade myself, so that was of course useful,” said the 29-year-old. Police removed the unconscious driver from the burning car and administered first aid. Together with the bus occupant, they got the fire under control; the fire brigade only had to put out the fire.
No daily use
“We are of course often involved in bus or truck accidents, but for us this is not an everyday occurrence,” says Strohmaier.
The 68-year-old driver of the accident was seriously injured and was taken to LKH Graz. The bus driver and his passengers escaped in horror. They were taken by a local bus company to a nearby banquet hall, where they waited for a replacement bus.
