Despite all the killings and shootings, liberal gun laws in the US don’t seem to be changing – even after the deadly Texas shooting that killed 19 children. Where does the American love of guns come from? And can this trend also spread to us in Austria? Katia Wagner will talk about this with her guests on krone.tv on Wednesday from 8:15 pm!
Once again the US is in shock. The attack on a primary school in Uvalde killed 19 children and two teachers. The alleged perpetrator, a 19-year-old loner, first shot his grandmother before driving to the later crime scene and opening fire. He was shot by police officers.
19 children dead: bloodiest school massacre in ten years
While reports of the latest attacks in the United States have sadly a sad frequency, the Uvalde shooting was the bloodiest school massacre in the United States in nearly a decade. And yet not much seems to change there. In no other country in the world are there so many weapons in circulation as in the US. There are even more firearms than civilians, at 120 guns per 100 inhabitants!
Trump’s Solution: “Arm the Teachers!”
Nevertheless, the US is again calling for stricter gun laws. An implementation seems to fail mainly because of the powerful weapons lobby NRA. Just days after the Texas massacre, they gathered for a convention that also included Donald Trump. His tip: “America needs real solutions now. Arm the teachers!”
Austria: one third of the murders of women with firearms
Discussions about our gun laws also flared up in Austria, especially after the terrorist attack in Vienna on November 2, 2020. The already strict legal situation was tightened after this sad incident. Also to protect women, because one third of all femicides in Austria are committed with a firearm.
Could the US trend towards guns also come to Austria?
After the Texas shooting, the world is wondering: What’s wrong with Americans? And: Could their trend to use firearms also come to us in Austria? Katia Wagner discusses this on Wednesday at 8:15 pm on krone.tv with the chairman of the advocacy organization for liberal gun law, Andreas Rippel. Join the conversation and vote!
