Tragedy in Salzburg – child woke father – mother died in fire

Date:

A candle outside the front door commemorates the tragedy. A family from Goldegg (Salzburg) forgot to turn off the stove – with fatal consequences.

In the middle of the night he was startled awake by the screams of his one-year-old son. The father of the family, 33, immediately noticed the heavy smoke – and didn’t hesitate. He called 911 shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday and reported in a panic: There was a fire in his Goldegger home. He lives with his child on the first floor, his partner (33) on the ground floor. Besides themselves, they wouldn’t make it. “We moved immediately, the house is close to our main fire brigade,” says local fire chief Simon Kühr.

“Huge smoke”
The father held the child out of the window until emergency services arrived to protect him from the toxic gases. “The fire itself was extinguished quickly, the big problem was the enormous smoke,” says Kühr. The fire brigade was able to rescue the family from the home; the mother was no longer conscious at that time. The emergency medical team immediately began CPR. Together with her son and partner, she was taken to Schwarzacher Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Hob as the cause
According to police, the fire started in the kitchen. The family had forgotten to turn off the stove. The public prosecutor has ordered an autopsy on the 33-year-old woman.
