At the Berlin Zoo, a male pelican couple adopted a chick born on January 23 (see video above). The egg had fallen from the nest and was no longer cared for by the parents. It initially went into an incubator.
“Charlie Brown” and “Halle” are now caring for the spotted pelican chick, a zoo spokeswoman announced Monday. The male sea pelican pair still wanted to breed and had already had a dummy egg placed in the nest. This was exchanged for the fertilized egg. The couple eventually successfully hatched the chick, which has not yet been named.
“The pair had already bred in previous years, but separately with female sea pelicans. This season marks the first time these two have come together as a same-sex couple,” the spokesperson said.
Sea pelicans are very social
Sea pelicans are said to be very social birds that build a nest from different materials such as feathers or grasses during the breeding season. Young animals hatch after about 30 days and are fed by both parents.
