Thomas Brudermann is a business psychologist and sustainability researcher. On Thursday he will be a guest at the Climate Dialogue in Bregenz. He revealed in advance to ‘Krone’ which excuses prevent us from doing more for the climate.
“Kron”: You have the book „The art of the excuse. Why we prefer to fool ourselves instead of living climate-friendly“ published, which is about excuses that prevent us from acting in a more climate-friendly manner. From a purely psychological perspective: what does the excuse strategy do for us humans?
Thomas Brudermann: The beauty of the excuse is that we can maintain our personal self-image. If there is a gap between reality and the demands we place on ourselves, then the excuse is a good way out. Because with this excuse I don’t have to admit to myself that climate protection is not that important to me – and I don’t have to change my behavior either. So this is very useful.
