Tentative until August 23 – AUA will end the mask requirement on flights from Wednesday

Date:

As part of changes to the mask requirement in Austria during the summer months, Austrian Airlines (AUA) will also end the mask requirement on its flights on Wednesday (June 1). The measure will initially apply until August 23.

According to the government measure, the obligation to wear an FFP2 mask or mouth and nose protection on flights has been suspended until August 23.

Mask can be worn voluntarily
However, any passenger can voluntarily continue to wear a mask. Even on flights to countries where masks are still mandatory, passengers and crew members must continue to wear masks.

No more free seat choice for cheap AUA tickets from autumn
Meanwhile, AUA parent Lufthansa continues to cut services in its cheapest “Economy Light” fare. From June 21, passengers with these tickets can only change seats on Lufthansa and Swiss-European flights for a fee of at least 25 euros, according to information on the Lufthansa website. The AUA will follow in the fall. There are only exceptions to flights to Italy if children between the ages of two and twelve or disabled persons are accompanied.

The AUA confirmed the change to “Economy Light”, the base fare of the Lufthansa Group airlines on European routes. “Going forward, this fare will be subject to a change fee if passengers wish to change the automatically assigned seat at check-in,” the AUA spokesperson said. The fee is 25 euros or more, depending on the flight route.

AUA offers airline ticket with sustainable fuel surcharge
By the way, those who want to fly environmentally friendly can now co-finance the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel with the AUA by paying a surcharge on the ticket. Previously, it was only possible to pay money for CO2 compensation projects when purchasing the ticket. However, the new surcharge is significantly higher.

If you want to compensate your CO2 emissions for a flight to Frankfurt with climate protection projects, you have to pay 1.71 euros – for sustainable jet fuel you will be charged 53.55 euros.
