Incumbent US President Joe Biden is repeatedly attacked because of his old age – his Republican rival Donald Trump also likes to question his suitability for this reason. In an interview, he turned the tables and declared to audience applause: “He’s about the same age as me, but he can’t remember his wife’s name.”
The two older men, who will probably compete for the highest office in the country, will not give anything away during the election campaign. The 81-year-old Democrat was repeatedly attacked because of his age or alleged memory impairment. Biden used the late night talk show with presenter Seth Mayers to deal with his competitor.
This post shows Trump’s actions, which Biden referenced:
Because at least he knows his wife’s name – unlike his 77-year-old opponent. He was referring to a video previously shown on the show. It showed that Trump apparently called his wife Melania “Mercedes”. However, social media users pointed out that the real estate mogul was likely referring to the event’s organizer, Mercedes Schlapp.
Meyers explained in the interview that Biden’s old age was “a real problem for American voters.” Biden countered that it was about “how old your ideas are.”
Biden: Trump is setting the country back decades
Trump wants to take the country back to the time before Roe v. Bring Back Wade, he said, referring to the 1973 ruling that established a constitutional, nationwide right to abortion. Eighteen months ago, the very conservative US Supreme Court, ruled by Trump, overturned the right to abortion. Since then, the right to abortion is no longer enshrined in the Constitution and the decision lies with the individual American states.
Biden joked early in the interview
When he took the stage, Biden also took aim at himself by initially pretending to have lost his way. The oldest president in American history recently came under fire for several failures. In the presidential elections on November 5, a duel between Biden and Trump is again looming.
