In an effort to provide more support to Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has traveled to Albania for the first time since the outbreak of war two years ago. There, Zelenskiy, who was welcomed by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama as a “leader of the heroic resistance”, will take part in a summit of the countries of the Western Balkans.
“Today I work in Tirana. I will meet Ukraine’s faithful friend, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, and participate in a summit between Ukraine and Southeastern Europe,” Zelensky wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.
“In our bilateral talks with the Prime Minister and his team, we will discuss defense and political cooperation, support for the peace formula and security agreements. Albania is one of the countries that signed the G7 Vilnius Declaration, which we highly appreciate,” Zelensky further wrote. Among other things, he wanted to propose the organization of a global peace summit in Switzerland.
Rama also wants to express the solidarity of the entire region with Ukraine. Before arriving in Albania, Zelensky visited Saudi Arabia and sought support after more than two years of Russian aggression.
Weakened in the third year of the war
Ukraine enters the third year of the war, weakened by the end of military aid from its allies. The counter-offensive in the summer of 2023 failed with painful losses. In Washington, a new aid package for Ukraine worth 60 billion dollars (about 55.7 billion euros) has been blocked for months by opposition Republicans in Congress. NATO member Albania has strongly supported Ukraine since the start of Russia’s war of aggression, but has until now largely remained secretive about arms deliveries to Kiev.
