Together with a large number of organizations and sympathizers, the Austrian Women’s Ring will take to the streets on Friday and protest resolutely – and in mourning clothes – against the numerous murders of women in Austria.
The year 2024 started with seven brutal femicides. There have been 144 femicides since 2018.
“This is an unbearable situation,” emphasizes Klaudia Frieben, president of the Austrian Women’s Ring. Austria is considered a country of femicide.
“Violence against women is a global problem”
“Any woman can become a victim of femicide, no matter how old she is, where she comes from, what kind of work she does. Violence against women knows no nationality, religion or origin. Violence against women is a global problem and therefore not an imported problem,” said Frieben.
We cannot and do not want to accept “this deep-rooted misogyny” any longer and therefore call on the government and all politicians “to take immediate action to stop men’s violence against women and femicides”.
‘Every woman in Austria should be able to live safely’
“The government, all ministries, state governments, cities and municipalities must jointly take effective and sustainable measures against violence. Every woman in Austria should be able to live in safety,” she explains.
“We call for at least 250 million euros per year and an increase of more than 3,000 full-time jobs to promote equality and prevent violence,” says Frieben. This also includes the extensive expansion of primary prevention.
