As is well known, the ‘healing powers’ of the black-green healthcare reform are being questioned by several experts. The criticism of the medication board in particular does not want to disappear. Patients across the country fear they will have to wait longer than necessary for new medications. The “Krone” spoke to one of them, experts and the ministry.
In 2002, Robert Arthofer was diagnosed with severe multiple sclerosis. He was immediately given strong medication. However, these have only alleviated suffering to a limited extent. He is currently waiting for the approval of new, effective and expensive drugs whose effects are promising but are still “under investigation”.
Arthofer, who also heads a self-help group for MS patients, fears that he will have to wait longer than necessary for the new medicines. Access to expensive medicines, which are essential for the survival of many patients, needs to be re-regulated.
A separate committee called an evaluation committee will be established in the first half of 2024, which will begin its work and in the future examine new medicines before they are sold or passed on and make appropriate recommendations. These tests relate, for example, to expensive cancer therapies or drugs used against rare diseases. Arthofer’s drug may also be affected. Every minute counts for him. “It’s about survival,” he himself told the “Krone”.
