Spectacular scenes took place at the border on Monday around 4.30 am. For one Serb and eight migrants, the illegal tour came to an abrupt end after a pursuit by the federal army.
The Serbian smuggler appeared in the early morning hours in a Mercedes with Bosnian number plates at the border crossing in Nikitsch-Sopronkövesd.
migrants dropped out
Only the driver was in the car. He dropped off the eight refugees he had driven through Hungary to Austria just before the checkpoint. While the migrants only made their way across the green border to Burgenland on foot, soldiers wanted to keep a close eye on the suspected driver.
But the criminal stepped on the gas and roared away. The army sounded the alarm and gave chase. The tugboat didn’t get very far. His car skidded on a slippery dirt road and suddenly got stuck. He was arrested without resistance by patrol officers, who were quickly on the spot.
Serbs taken away
The Serb was handcuffed and taken to the detention cell of the Oberpullendorf police station. He confessed that he had received eight refugees in Hungary and brought them to the Austrian border with a driver: “After the check, I wanted to pick them up in Nikitsch and bring them to Vienna”, the perpetrator confessed.
The migrants, who were picked up in Nikitsch a little later, confirmed this when confronted by the smuggler.
help expected
The increasing number of seizures by the Nikitsch community makes it difficult to manage. Mayor Johann Balogh has so far had an open ear for the population and their concerns. At Monday night’s city council meeting, he handed over the office to his son Christian, who wants to face the challenges ahead: “We are finally expecting help from the federal government.”
