Large parts of Austria were hit by severe storms on Thursday evening. After two children were killed by a falling tree in the Lavanttal in Carinthia, the storm has now also claimed lives in Gaming (Lower Austria). Three hikers were struck by lightning.
According to Chief Inspector Johann Baumschlager, the accident happened in the area of Zellerrain Strasse. According to the police spokesperson, shortly before 6 p.m., an emergency call came from the area around Holzhüttenboden due to fallen trees. There were also injuries.
Police, rescue teams on the ground and the emergency doctor helicopter “Christophorus 15” took off. According to Baumschlager, it was clear around 6.45 pm that three people had been killed.
According to initial information, the three hikers would have previously tried to take refuge in a hut. The lightning should have hit a tree, which in turn fell on the hut with the group of hikers.
