26 people have suffered chlorine poisoning in an accident in a hotel swimming pool in Mallorca. Ten of them, including three children, were taken to hospital for treatment. A seven-year-old was seriously injured, police said.
The incident happened Monday afternoon at a hotel in Port d’Alcúdia in northern Mallorca, the newspaper “Diario de Mallorca” and other media reported on Tuesday, citing the Samu emergency service on the Spanish holiday island.
Reopened after two hours
According to the hotel management, the cause of the accident is a technical problem with the chlorine supply. The hotel pool was temporarily closed and reopened after about two hours with normal chlorine levels.
The condition of the patients treated in the hospital is stable, said a spokesman for Son Espases hospital in the island’s capital, Palma. The injured complained of itching, vomiting, difficulty breathing and a burning sensation in the eyes.
