The two countries are entering a ratification process that will take months, so formal alliance entry will not arrive until late 2022 or early 2023.
Euskaraz irakurri: Sweden and Finland NATOko kide will say ‘de facto’
Sweden and Finland signed this Tuesday the protocol of accession to NATO, for which they de facto members of the military alliance in the absence of formal ratification.
The 30 allies have signed the document supporting the acceptance of the two countries’ accession to the military organization. This news comes after the summit that took place last week in Madrid, where negotiations with Turkey to lift its veto after a month-long blockade were concluded.
Nevertheless, once the agreement was signed, the Turkish authorities insisted that Sweden and Finland must commit to the document, and threatened to block their accession again in the ratification phase.
Now a bureaucratic procedure begins with each ally’s accession protocols. Every country has a different validation system, so the ratification phase takes months For this reason, the formal accession of Sweden and Finland will only arrive late 2022 or early 2023.
