Two researchers from Joanneum Research are making an important contribution to the protection of biodiversity in Styria with new measuring methods: meadows, forests and heaths can be surveyed from the air using ‘remote sensing’. These are the habitats of native animals, more and more of which are on the “Red List”.
Recently, a new European database caused a stir: biodiversity in green spaces is rapidly declining – even in Austria, well-known plants such as daisy and meadow sage are disappearing from the meadows. “Insect species are also declining dramatically, but they are very important as the basis of the food chain,” says Manuela Hirschmugl. Why does she know this? Hirschmugl conducts research into monitoring biodiversity – namely from the air – for Joanneum Research and the University of Graz.
