“Both entertaining and educational” – that is the verdict on the highly creative and bizarre dance entry “Kangaroo Time (Club Edit)” in this year’s “Dance Your PhD Contest 2024” competition. Scientists from all disciplines are called upon to express research results through dance.
Weliton Menário Costa, a PhD candidate at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, did it best this year, saying he was “impressed” by the judges because the video was “both entertaining and educational”. His alma mater also cheered: “From kangaroo whisperer to global dance sensation!”
Representation of different kangaroo personalities
The biologist known as WELI and also singer-songwriter combines a funky beat and cool lyrics with drag queens and Brazilian dancers in the colorful video.
WELI, who has Brazilian roots herself, is both the lead actor and the director. Using dance styles, he cleverly illustrated various personality traits of kangaroos.
The variety of dances, from classical ballet to twerking to Brazilian dance moves, reflected the range of Kangaroo personalities across the spectrum, “from bolder types to more timid ones,” the report said. The video also features jumping – based on the marsupials.
“Equivalent to winning the Eurovision Song Contest”
“We found that kangaroos like to interact in groups, but prefer smaller social circles,” he explains. “And just like in humans, kangaroo personalities manifest early in life.” Siblings among marsupials, among others, often exhibit similar temperaments, he reveals to his fans. He is happy with first place: “For me, winning this competition is the equivalent of winning the Eurovision Song Contest.”
