What happened: A Syrian family had entrusted a self-proclaimed voodoo magician with 15,000 euros. He had promised them that he would miraculously increase their money using a mysterious liquid and incantations. When the plan failed and the money and magicians ran out, the relatives found the man in a prefabricated building in January 2023 and kidnapped him.
Two days later they returned to Leipzig to search the man’s apartment again. They were arrested by the police and the alleged magician was released. The judgments are not yet final.
Dangerous bodily harm and attempted coercion
Eighteen months after the kidnapping, the verdict in the case was pronounced: four men received two years in prison for deprivation of liberty, grievous bodily harm and attempted coercion, and another suspect received six months in prison for aiding and abetting. All sentences were suspended.
The president of the Leipzig Regional Court, Bernd Gicklhorn, explained the decision: “Despite the drama, the incident was presented in a milder manner than initially accused.”
