The head of European diplomacy and the president of the European Parliament defend sending more weapons to Kiev
The European Union (EU) has condemned the attacks on civilians in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities “in the strongest possible way”. The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, is “deeply shocked” by the bombings that have taken place in the Ukrainian capital – which left at least eight dead and 12 injured – and the attacks in cities such as Mikolaiv, Zaporizhzhya and Dnipro. “These acts have no place in the twenty-first century and I condemn them in the strongest possible way,” he said.
The community bloc has strengthened its support for Ukraine, stressing that “more military aid is on the way”. Borrell has been one of the main proponents of sending arms to Kiev with the proposal for a sixth tranche through which the EU will fund military aid to the country. “Wars are won with weapons,” he said a few weeks ago before the European Parliament, where he asked Member States and European citizens to “don’t waver” in their support for Ukraine.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has also shown her rejection of the “disgusting” Russian bombings. These acts, he said, “show the world once again what regime we are up against: a regime that attacks indiscriminately.” Faced with the freedom and territorial sovereignty that Ukraine defends, Putin personifies “a reign of terror and death (…). This is criminal. They will be responsible. Ukraine will win and Europe will not look the other way,” writes him on his social networks.
In a second message, the Maltese assured that “the only way out of the Kremlin is to leave the country” and added that “reconciliation will not work” with Russia, in a clear reference to sending weapons from the West. The president of the European Parliament has become stricter since the start of the Russian invasion, and at last week’s summit in Prague she assured that Ukraine needs “heavy weapons and tanks”. “The Member States can supply them. As Russia escalates its aggression, we too must respond in kind (…). We shouldn’t look the other way,” he said.
