Are British and French forces actively involved in the use of long-range missiles in Ukraine? At least that is what German Chancellor Olaf Scholz casually claimed during an event in Berlin. His statements leave allies and opposition members stunned.
Olaf Scholz has a new favorite phrase: “Germany will not become a war party!” Neither directly nor indirectly. It is enough that British and French forces in Ukraine are actively involved in delivering ‘Storm Shadow’ cruise missiles to the target.
Did Scholz betray his allies?
Scholz said this casually on Monday at an event in Berlin, when a moderator asked him about his no to Taurus deliveries. “What the British and French do in terms of target control and the guidance of target control cannot be done in Germany,” the Social Democrat explained, leaving his allies in dire need of an explanation.
The statement is seen as a threat to military and diplomatic personnel on the ground. Tobias Ellwood, the former chairman of the House of Commons Defense Committee, told the British newspaper The Telegraph: “This is a blatant misuse of intelligence information designed to distract from Germany’s reluctance to arm Ukraine with its own long-range missile system. “
London contradicts Scholz
He assumes that Scholz’s comments “will undoubtedly be used by Russia to climb another rung of the escalation ladder.” The British government has now officially denied that Britain is directly involved in the use of long-range cruise missiles against Russian positions in Ukraine.
The use of the delivered weapon systems and the ‘target selection process’ are the responsibility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a spokesperson for the British Ministry of Defense said. However, Scholz suggested on Monday that the Ukrainians alone would not be able to operate the cruise missiles. Literally said: “Anyone who has dealt with this system knows this and that is why I am always surprised that the question is asked.” London rejects this.
Berlin and Paris introduce themselves
According to reports, his statements also caused great surprise in Paris. The German-French relationship has suffered seriously since the start of the war. Both parties accuse each other of doing too little for Ukraine. In particular, Scholz strongly rejected Macron’s proposal to send NATO troops to Ukraine.
“NATO is not a party to the war – and will not be,” the SPD man said in a video message on Wednesday evening. He did not repeat his accusations on Monday.
The Scholz statement on Macron’s initiative for revision:
Macron defended his move by saying that the unthinkable has become insane again and again in the recent past. At the special Ukraine summit in Paris on Monday, he smugly shouted at Scholz: “I remind you that two years ago many people at this table said: ‘We will send sleeping bags and helmets.'” That’s when came the explosive statements from Scholz had already been rounded.
CDU foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen accuses the German chancellor of losing control of his own arguments. He said that on Platform
Scholz does not deliver Stier – against all expectations
Ukraine has been expressing its desire for Taurus cruise missiles in Berlin for months. It wants to use these enormous long-range missiles, among other things, to hit Russian supply lines far behind the front. The Chancellery is concerned that the war in Ukraine will escalate in this way with German participation. The traffic light partners Greens and FDP advocate deliveries of Taurus to Ukraine.
