Serious fraud – Rental cars from Styria used for smugglers’ runs

Date:

Four men rented three vehicles in Wagna but never returned them. They are suspected of having used these cars for human trafficking. The suspects were arrested in Hungary and Romania and extradited to Austria.

At the end of July 2022, four Romanian nationals (two each 22 years old and 23 and 24 years old) rented three vehicles from a car rental company in the Leibnitz district. They did not return the cars after the rental period expired and all attempts to contact them by the car rental company manager were unsuccessful. He then filed a report because the damage was in the five figures.

The Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the arrest of the four men. Two of the suspects, the two 22-year-old men, were located and arrested in Romania after intensive investigation. The two are said to have dragged migrants to Austria. They were extradited to Austria in October 2022, but neither confessed and were taken to Graz-Jakomini prison.

Arrest while driving a smuggler
The other two suspects were arrested in Hungary in September 2022 during a migrant smuggling trip. On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, after serving their sentences in Hungary, they were finally extradited to Austria. During interrogation they showed no more confessions than their accomplices. According to the police, one of the three vehicles has been seized, but no trace of the other two has yet been found.
