A 62-year-old hiker was about to take a break on the Schafberg when he made a gruesome discovery: There was a person under the Purtschellersteig. An emergency doctor who was brought to the motionless body by helicopter had to confirm that it was a corpse.
The 62-year-old from the Gmunden district was on his way to the Purtschellersteig on the Schafberg on Thursday. Unable to continue due to snow fields, he took a break and sat down. But the rest didn’t last long: the 62-year-old discovered a motionless body beneath him.
Emergency doctor tied up
The hiker immediately called for help. The rescue helicopter “Christophorus 6” was able to locate the lying person after a short search flight and dropped off an emergency doctor in the steep terrain. Unfortunately, he could only confirm that the man was dead.
Fatalities identified
Only a day later could the identity of the body be clarified beyond doubt after a police helicopter team found a backpack in the area – it contained the ID of a 50-year-old Styrian. According to police, the mountain climber may have slipped in a snow field on Wednesday, fell over a ten to fifteen meter high wall and slipped even further on a steep grass field. The Styria did not survive this tragic accident.
