In India, seven men raped a Spanish tourist – in the presence of her partner. The couple chronicled their ordeal on Instagram.
Spanish influencer Fernanda (28), who calls herself ‘fernanda.4ever’ on Instagram, is currently traveling around the world by motorcycle with her partner Vicente (45).
As the newspaper ‘Bild’ reported, the two run the travel blog ‘vueltaalmundoenmoto’ together and hundreds of thousands of people follow their stories.
However, in their latest video, the couple reports an attack (see post below). While camping at a remote location in Dumka district of Jharkhand state on March 1, several men approached the tent and initially threw stones at the couple. Then seven men attacked her and forced her to have sex.
At one point, as Fernanda describes, they managed to escape. “Something happened to us that we wouldn’t wish on anyone,” they wrote in the post on Instagram. “Seven men raped me, beat us and robbed us.”
“They held a knife to my throat.”
Both have tears in their eyes in the video. In further photos the man shows his injuries. “My mouth is literally destroyed,” the blogger wrote. “They hit me several times on the head with the helmet and with a stone (…). They held a knife to my throat and told me they were going to kill me.” However, things are getting worse for Fernanda.
“We thought we were going to die”
A day after the attack, the influencer posted images from the hospital on her Instagram story. Several facial injuries can be seen. She wrote: “This is what my face looks like. But that’s not what hurts the most. We thought we were going to die. Thank God we’re still alive.”
Comfort and encouragement
She gets a lot of comfort and encouragement on Instagram. “Not only is it terrible for you, it also damages the image of our nation and feeds the stereotype that women in India are not safe at all,” one user wrote. “Our government will not let any criminal go unpunished. “You will soon be behind bars,” the user continued. Another wrote: “An entire nation is behind you. Not all Indians are the same. We don’t treat our guests like that!”
According to several consistent reports from local media, three of the suspected men have now been arrested. The others are being examined at high speed.
Gang rapes are not uncommon in India
Violent crimes against women related to rape are not uncommon in India, and gang rapes are also regularly reported. In 2014, two cousins (14 and 16 years old) were raped, murdered and then hanged from a tree. Six men were subsequently arrested. In 2018, a case made headlines in which a nine-year-old girl was raped multiple times and then murdered.
