In Britain, people will need a permit to keep primates from 2026. The British government has decided this, it was announced on Tuesday. The animals must then be kept at the level of zoos.
It is estimated that there are currently around 5,000 pet primates living in Britain. Wild animals have complex welfare and social needs, experts say. In most environments they could not be properly maintained. “These new measures will improve the welfare of potentially thousands of these intelligent animals.”
There is a threat of expulsion and a fine
Anyone who does not have a permit and still keeps primates risks a fine and the animals will be removed from 2026. This was announced by British State Secretary Robert Peter Douglas-Miller.
According to the government, the stricter requirements would in fact amount to a ban on keeping animals. Animal rights activists welcomed the new rules, but would have preferred a complete ban. According to them, the permit system must be strictly controlled.
