Italians have to pay 260,000 euros for electricity

Date:

A jeweler in Venice recently received a nasty surprise. He would pay more than 260,000 euros for electricity for his 15 square meter store on St. Mark’s Square. The man had previously switched to a new energy supplier.

In just two months, the company billed him for one million kilowatt hours of usage. In concrete terms, Gianmaria Tiozzo would have to pay 282,348 euros by March 12. “That is an amount that (…) I have absolutely no intention of paying,” said the Venice resident. He has already contacted the electricity supplier and asked for the bill to be reversed. In recent years, Tiozzo paid an average of 1,200 to 1,300 euros in electricity for two months for his 15 square meter shop.

Probably an error has happened
Errors with electricity and water bills are not uncommon in Italy. For example, an 88-year-old woman received a bill for more than 15,339 euros from her water supplier in December. Half of the money had already been transferred to her bank, because she had issued a direct debit authorization.

This upset the elderly woman so much that she was taken to intensive care. The Italian woman actually only had to pay 65 euros between August and October. The error is believed to be due to a faulty meter or an error in the reading. The water supplier then apologized to the family and refunded the amount. However, the woman died three weeks later.
