Pre-trial side act – The brutal environment of the Viennese machete murderers

Date:

The brutal murder of an Algerian will be heard on Friday in the Vienna Regional Court – he was allegedly literally hacked to pieces by three men with a machete. In a side-act to the bloody case, there is already a verdict – and frightening insights before the murder trial.

On April 20, 2023, a 32-year-old was literally dismembered in the Jägerstraße metro station in Vienna-Brigittenau. The murder weapon: a machete that nearly severed the victim’s limbs. From Friday, four Algerians will have to answer before the Vienna regional court for the murder of their compatriot.

Power struggles and territorial disputes
A sideline of the bloody case has already been dealt with. The victim was part of a North African drug dealer group. One of his cannabis sources – a 36-year-old Algerian – has already been sentenced to three and a half years in prison in Vienna for passing on 30 kilos of drugs. “As well as some serious physical injuries captured on video,” confirms his lawyer Christian Werner.

The act gives an idea of the atrocities that took place in the group of perpetrators – of which the 32-year-old was also a victim. “There were power struggles, territorial disputes and disputes over drug proceeds within the association. These fights were repeatedly carried out with violence,” the prosecutor wrote in the indictment against the convicted dealer. And it also suggests that about 200 other people are being investigated for drugs and violence – even murder…

Killed by his own street vendors
The four accused machete killers were also part of this unscrupulous drug dealer group. Three of the men (25, 22, 21) even worked as street vendors for their later victim. According to the Public Prosecution Service, a dispute related to the drug deals ultimately meant the death penalty for the Algerian.

If three of them are convicted of murder, they could face life in prison. One of the Algerians was under 21 years old at the time of the crime and could therefore only be sentenced to twenty years in prison.
